[Q] What is a RUU? topic

Hi I'm using HTC One M9 from Bell Mobility.
My phone is rooted so I want to know what's a RUU in case I may need it.
I noticed that right now there is no suitable RUU for Bell's M9, would it be available in the future?
Also, what is CID, do you need it if you want to flash a RUU?
Sorry for knowing so little I'm just a noob,
