what am i doing wrong? even after i WIPE "dalvik cache, system, cache and data and fresh install a ROM... i can still see my pictures in my gallery. it exists in internal memory. is it suppose to be like this?

I was reading the whole process of unlocking the bootloader, installing custom recovery, then rooting but unfortunately I didn't want to wipe the internal data storage in the process. Is there a way to get it rooted without wiping the phone?
