[Q] bricking due to kernel vs rom (doubt) topic

I know flashing a kernel with rom of wrong baseband version can brick the phone often making it not recoverable( I guess). But is this the same with custom rom? I havent experimented it n dont even want to risk my phone. I m asking just out of curiousity. :)
